Series 5 of record group RG 81-14 consists of mining production and cost statistics for the years 1926-1964. These records provide data, by mine or mineral range, on number of tons mined and shipped; number of active mines; average number of days worked; number of men employed; average daily and yearly wage; tons mined per man day; taxes paid; costs per ton for labor, supplies transportation, overhead, marketing, and taxes; and profit made.

The Michigan Geological Survey was created by Public Act 20 of 1837. Its purpose was to conduct a geological and mineralogical survey of the state. The state legislature appointed Douglass Houghton the first state geologist (1837). In 1921, the state legislature established the Department of Conservation, and the Michigan Geological Survey became part of that department (Public Act 17 of 1921).
